Volunteers Needed!!!

The Horner AVID site team is looking for college-going (and/or parent) volunteers/tutors to help out during the AVID elective. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a K – 12 program that helps students achieve academic success in honors or advanced classes and build skills necessary for college.

What do volunteers do?

AVID students participate in tutorials twice a week. During tutorials students break into groups based on the subject matter of their questions. In those groups, students present their questions to their group. The group members then help the student presenter get to the right answer by asking more pointed questions about their initial question.

Ideally, each tutorial group has a tutor or facilitator that monitors the group’s progress and keeps them focused. The job of the tutor is not to give the students the right answer. We are looking for college-going (and/or parent) volunteers to be the tutors of the tutorial groups. The tutor helps the students model the learning process. The tutor does not need to know the answer to the students’ questions.

Hopefully, volunteers would want to come consistently during 1st period on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 – 9:05 (8th grade) and 2nd period on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:08 - 9:54 (7th grade).
