Welcome to AVID @ Horner
AVID = We are COLLEGE BOUND!
What is AVID at Horner?
AVID is a Horner elective class offered to students who are focused on the FUTURE. This year-long course lets you explore and prepare to ultimately enter a four-year college or university. You'll gain special skills to make studying easier, more efficient and more successful. You'll work with classmates to help each other master the information you need for the honors or advanced placement courses you need to take in high school. Field trips, guest speakers and fun motivational activities are all ways that you'll learn more about who you are, where you want to go and how to get there!
What does AVID stand for?*
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a proven college readiness system that spans elementary through higher education that is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. Although AVID serves all students, the AVID elective focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge. AVID now impacts more than 700,000 students in more than 4,900 schools and 28 post-secondary institutions in 46 states, the District of Columbia and across 16 other countries/territories.
What distinguishes AVID from other educational reform programs is its continuous success rate. Of the 33,204 AVID seniors in 2012 who reported their demographics, academic achievement data and future plans, just over 98 percent indicated they would be graduating from high school, with 90 percent planning to attend a post-secondary institution.
